Storytelling Book

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller StorybookGypsy Roma Traveller History Month 2009 in partnership with the NATT+ organised a national storytelling competition for school children and young people. The winning and highly commended stories from all the age categories have been compiled into a new book, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Storybook, published by the NATT+.

The competition was designed to highlight the oral storytelling tradition that Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities have passed down from generation to generation. School children and young people were invited to write a story centred around the rich history and culture of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers.

The Storybook is FREE to all NATT+ members. If you would like a copy send your address to Claire Lockwood and you'll be sent a copy. Only one copy per member.

Over 800 entries were received from throughout England and Wales from children as young as four to young people aged eighteen. The stories were handwritten, typed, recorded on DVD and even submitted as a Powerpoint Presentations. It was wonderful to see that so many had included illustrations and photographs, some which appear in the book.

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Storybook Spreads

Reading through the stories gives the reader an insight into the lives, culture and history of these communities. You will find tragedy next to humour and imaginative tales next to stories of personal experience. This book will enhance children and young people’s knowledge, understanding and pride in the rich history and culture of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.

“This is a rich, vivid and truly wonderful collection of stories about Traveller life and times from a new generation of very talented storytellers. The superb quality and variety of the writing make it a must read for anyone who is truly interested in great stories.”

Richard O’Neill – Professional Storyteller
