Lord Avebury – Obituary
Added: Feb 18, 2016 | General News
Lord Avebury, who has died aged 87, was as Eric Lubbock, a highly-rated Liberal MP and longest serving Liberal Democrat peer. He inherited the title of Baron Avebury in 1971 but was elected to remain in the House of Lords in 1999. He was a strong campaigner for Human Rights and in particular the rights of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Communities.
In his career as MP he promoted the 1968 Caravan Sites Act and more recently protested in the House of Lords about the Dale Farm eviction. Lord Avebury supported the start of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month and hosted the first event to celebrate the GRTHM competition in the House of Lords.
He has supported the rights of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers up until last year and his enthusiasm and passion will be missed.
